Holiday shopping in downtown Brattleboro isn’t a chore around here. It’s more like a scavenger hunt.

We watch guests leave for an hour and come back with three bags and a grin they can’t quite explain. A stay at the Latchis Hotel puts you right in the middle of it, with an easy home base for a trip like this.

Where We Always Start Downtown

We always start at street level, right outside our own front doors. Main Street runs straight through the middle of it all. Nothing here requires a car, or even a real plan.

Gallery Walk happens on the first Friday of the month from May through December, and the whole street gets a festive buzz. The Brattleboro Museum and Art Center keeps its doors open until 8pm on Gallery Walk nights, with free admission after 5pm. It’s an easy way to start a day of Brattleboro shopping.

Where We Shop for Gifts

Every good holiday list needs a stop for the person who already owns everything.

These four spots are where we send guests first:

• The Shoe Tree: family-run since 1990, with comfort brands like Dansko and Birkenstock, plus wool socks that make a useful unique holiday gift.
• Wonderland Yarns: hand-dyed yarn and craft kits, with a dye studio viewing window kids love peeking into.
• Everyone’s Books: one of our favorite Brattleboro bookstores, leaning into social change titles and multicultural children’s books.
• Brattleboro Books: staff picks and Vermont authors line the shelves, plus used finds you won’t spot at a big box store.

Walk in with zero plans, and you’ll still leave with something worth wrapping.

Handmade Finds We Look Forward To

Some gifts carry a story, and Brattleboro makes those easy to find. Wheelhouse Clay Center sells pottery thrown by the same hands that teach the classes upstairs. Each piece looks a little different from the last. First Proof Press turns out letterpress cards and prints on old-fashioned presses.

Neither shop restocks the same piece twice, so grab it while it’s there.

Foodie Gifts We Never Show Up Without

Nobody on our list has ever turned down a box of Vermont cheese. Three stops cover both gifting and grabbing lunch on the same walk.

Add these to your route:

• Retreat Farm Market: local Vermont foods, pantry staples, and gift-worthy finds that make it easy to build a holiday basket.
• Mocha Joe’s Coffee Roasters: fresh beans bagged daily and easy to pack for the trip home.
• Brattleboro Food Co-op: the deli counter solves lunch quickly, and it’s one of the best places to eat while you shop.

That makes it easy to hit all three without adding much walking.

Local Art Worth the Stop

Our town takes its art seriously, holidays or not. The Brattleboro Museum and Art Center runs a small gift shop, just up the street from us. It’s stocked with prints, books, and gifts that even the kids like sneaking home. Every purchase there directly supports the museum.

Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts and Gallery in the Woods are both a short walk from downtown. Duck into both, rain or shine, for finds you won’t see twice. Both carry work in a range of sizes and price points, so there’s something for every list.

Markets Worth the Time

Some of our best finds never touch a storefront shelf at all. The Brattleboro Winter Farmers’ Market runs Saturdays from November through March, 10am – 2pm. Vendors sell maple, wool, and baked goods worth waking the whole family up early for.

Pair a market morning with an afternoon of gallery hopping, and you’ve got yourself a plan. That combo makes for a full day of winter fun that costs nothing but time. The best baked goods tend to sell out early, so plan for a morning visit.

Where We Find Our Favorite Holiday Decor

Ornaments and decorations deserve their own stop on the list. Twice Upon a Time fills three stories with antiques, glassware, and forgotten treasures worth digging through. We’ve bought more than one ornament here over the years. More than once, it became that year’s tree topper back home.

Good News for Last-Minute Shoppers

By the time you reach your last gift, the season can feel rushed. Downtown Brattleboro makes last-minute shopping a little easier. The Downtown Brattleboro Alliance offers extended hours and seasonal sales each December during Holly Days and Holly Nights.

Many of the same storefronts also join the Festival of Miniatures all month long. Windows fill with tiny dollhouses and model trains, worth a look after closing time. We’ve done our own last-minute shopping too. That’s one more reason last-minute holiday shopping here feels less last-minute than it sounds.

Plan Your Brattleboro Shopping Day

End the day the way we always do, with a drink you didn’t have to drive home from. A short walk from downtown puts you within reach of local breweries, no car required. A few wineries sit a short drive beyond that, if you’re up for it. Come back to the historic Latchis afterward and drop the bags by the door.

Pick a vinyl record from the collection in your room and put your feet up for the night. It’s an easy way to end a day spent mostly on foot. Reserve your stay and build your own Brattleboro shopping day around it.
